Tips for Practicing Yoga at Home

Wow - deja vu! Gyms and yoga studios are closed again, and we’re back to working out and practicing yoga at home. This constant change can feel pretty exhausting right? It’s okay to feel a bit overwhelmed and low on energy right now. Whilst I believe that yoga can help us to navigate the crazy world that we find ourselves living in at the moment, with our weekly routine constantly being disrupted it can be really hard to find regularity with our practice.

As we enter into a brand new year, it’s a great time to establish a new routine. So I’m here to share a few tips to help you find consistency and get all the feel good energy from your home yoga practice this January.

Establish a routine

I recently wrote about the importance of finding a routine with your home practice in an email to my mailing list subscribers. When you’re at home you might have the mindset of practicing at ‘some point’, but it’s easy for the day to fly by and as time passes, often our motivation dwindles. Just like you would for attending a class in a studio, write down in your diary the time and the day that you will practice and do your best to stick to it.

Find a calm space

If there are other people in your household, try and find a space where you won’t be disrupted to roll out your yoga mat. I know this might be easier said than done in a busy household, but remember that you are deserving of this sacred ‘me time’, so try and find a space that is your own little sanctuary. You might even want to light some candles or diffuse some essential oils to make the space even more calming.

Put some music on

Playing music always helps to motivate me to move. When practicing at home, you’re in total control of the playlist, so put on your favourite songs of the month and let the rhythm of the music help you to move. No judgements here - if hip hop or heavy metal speak to your soul, let them become part of your practice!

Make it easy for yourself

In lockdown I wear leggings pretty much every day. Yes that’s partly because they are seriously comfy to lounge around in, but it’s also because it means I’m ready to practice yoga when the time comes. As soon as my allocated ‘yoga time’ arrives, I’m already dressed and ready to go. That voice in my head can’t say ‘ah I wanted to practice but I’m wearing jeans and can’t be bothered to get changed’. I’m making it easy for myself. This is just one super simple way that I make it easy for myself. Another way to do it is to put your mat out ready the night before, or to choose the exact online video that you are going to do in advance.

Through my online membership I’ve tried to help keep it easy for you by having a whole heap of pre-recorded yoga videos in one place for you to do at a time that fits in with your schedule. There are lots of different kinds of yoga flows on there too, so whether you’re feeling an energising and sweaty or a slow and gentle class, I’ve got you covered. There is no contract so even if you want to join the membership whilst studios are closed and cancel your subscription when they re-open, that’s totally fine! You can join and cancel at any time.

I’d love to guide you from my home to yours and help you to feel positive and energised this January. Click the link below to sign up and if there is anyone that you might think would benefit from this online subscription, feel free to share this post with them and spread the love!
